Take to the seas with your own Garlean Submarine, as seen in the
Shadowbringers trial
Castrum Marinum. A vessel perfectly equipped to hunt down the pirates harassing Garlemald's poor merchant ships, or deploy naval mines to annihilate the competition. The mod includes an original-sized minion version as well as a scaled-down mount version.
Q&AQ: How did you make this?
A: The process is similar to how I made the Garlean Hypersonic Assault Craft mod, except due to the original object being composed of seven materials (well beyond the four-material limit of the game), I had to learn how to texture bake (merge two texture maps into one). Plenty of frustration, crying, and hair ripped out later, and I finally made it work. Not sure how many hours I spent on all that, but I think it was worth it. :)
Q: Why does the minion despawn when I swim, or why can't I spawn it while swimming?
A: Squeenix has banned all forms for fun.
Q: How did you make your character stand aboard the submarine minion?
A: I used a G-Posing plogon called Brio to adjust my character and the minion's position.
Q: Why did you scale the mount down when you refused to scale down the Garlean Hypersonic Assault Craft mount?
A: If I had retained the original size, the camera would be clipping the mount, or the mount would be clipping deeply into the ground. To make the mount travel just above the waterline when traveling just above water, some compromises had to be made. Also, the smaller scale helps give the impression that water surfaces are much bigger than they really are. Also also, I am the ultimate arbiter of what to scale and what not to scale for the mods I create, so there.
hairflipQ: Why did you choose to use the Zephyrous Zabuton as the minion?
A: Because the mount comes with custom music that will only play if the mod is enabled under the Default collection in Penumbra, the mod will affect every minion in the world. The Zephyrous Zabuton was therefore a better choice than the Plush Cushion or others, due to how rarely it is placed down by players. If you still wish to G-Pose without the minion, you can use a plogon like Brio to load the Zephyrous Zabuton's appearance onto a different one, like the Plush Cushion.
Q: Why is the mod file so BIG? Does it really need to be 166.6MB?
A: The original model is composed of seven materials, well-exceeding the four-material limit typically allowed by the game. Texture baking allowed me to bypass this limit, but the trade-off is that these custom textures use a different UV map than the original files, meaning that they are not as compressed as the originals. On top of that, the textures needed to be 4096x4096 pixels (4k resolution resolution) in order to preserve their details. Mare's compression should decrease the size to about 10.89MB, however.
Q: Where is Castrum Marinum located in lore?
A: Castrum Marinum is located in-between Vylbrand (the island La Noscea is located on) and Thanalan on mainland Eorzea. You might be wondering, "Wait, weren't the Garleans driven out during Operation Archon back in
A Realm Reborn?" Well no, actually. According to
Encyclopedia Eorzea Vol. 1, p. 185, the command structure was fractured, but the remaining Garleans locked themselves inside the strongholds.
Encyclopedia Eorzea Vol. 2, p. 146 reiterates this, stating that the remaining Imperials have been suffered to remain, but were effectively defanged. The Red Mage quest
On Lambard's Trail in
Stormblood has you fighting Imperial holdouts in Northern Thanalan, and finally, Valdeaulin states in the
Shadowbringers quest
Blood of Emerald that remnants of the XIVth still remain in Imperial castra in Eorzea. We do know some members of the XIVth made their way back to Garlemald, such as Octavia in the
Endwalker quest
Personae non Gratae, but with the Legion cut off, it would not be a stretch to say that some still remain in the Imperial strongholds. After all, groups of Japanese holdouts lasted for years after World War II:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_holdoutQ: Will you update this when 7.0 drops?
A: As with my ever-expanding list of works, if the graphics for it improve, then yes.
Known Issues:
• Due to originally being a background object, the mount does not have any animations. A fix is planned for this if I ever learn how to create custom skeletons and improve my animation skills beyond a tentative introduction.
• The submarine's lights do not glow, due to requiring more texture customization. It might eventually be fixed, though doing so would require me to rework the materials completely, which makes it less of a priority.
• Even as of 6.55, we still don't know whether Garlemald will consolidate its remaining territories and elect a new Emperor to lead it as an Empire (albeit significantly reduced in power and territory), become an oligarchy led by ultra-rich senators like The Russian Federation, return to being a republic like The People's Republic of China, or transform into something entirely different.
